Central Heating systems come in various forms. A central heating boiler, central heating radiator and pipework are common components in many of these Gas Central Heating Systems, they are simple in plumbing terms.

Sealed and vented or pumped systems are the two leading types of Central Heating Systems available.
Pumped/vented systems are the most frequent. A pumped/vented Gas Central Heating System has a feed and expansion tank. Hot water from the storage tank supplies your kitchen and bath while also heating up the radiators. The expansion tank has enough space to allow for the expanding of water as a result of heating. The tank is placed in the highest place, normally the loft area. It performs dual functions by providing hot water and heating up the house.

The sealed Central Heating system is one that more and more people are opting for these days. As the name indicates, a sealed system is a an enclosed system therefore no expansion water tanks are needed. There are benefits to have this closed type of system with pipework and tanks being unnecessary.
- Frozen loft pipes are no longer a problem.
- As opposed to pumped/vented systems there is no need for maintenance work on tanks or pipes.
- Because the system is not vented, there is less chance of water leaking out.
- The sealing of the system eliminates dirt buildup, air locking and corrosion that often troubles open vented systems.
- It is possible to flush out the system if required by using the mains water supply.
All the required controls and safety devices are incorporated into the sealed Gas Central Heating systems. The sealed system gets its water through the main water supply at pressure. The mains water goes direct to the sealed system.
The system also has a pressure vessel which contains compressed gas, it controls the variations in pressure and a diaphragm is used to separate it from the sealed system. A safety valve will let water to escape or fill up depending on whether the pressure becomes too high or too low respectively.
As compared to other heating systems, Gas Central Heating systems are cheaper to run. And they provide you with much more control and choice when it comes to your heating compared to any other systems.
