When I purchase a Carbon Monoxide detector what should I look for?

Good quality Carbon Monoxide detectors have a high pitched alarm and are certified to British Standards. Co is detected giving you time to evacuate the room. You should avoid the cheaper electronic sensors which have a coloured spot which will change in colour when high Carbon Monoxide Gas levels are detected. Chemical detectors have 6 month lifetimes and are not cost effective in the long run as they have to be replaced often. The lack of the hearable alarm in a chemical detector means that this type of alarm cannot alert you at night when you are asleep. Both types of alarms are now commonly available in DIY stores.

Do the stores sell Co electronic sensors?

Co detectors can be effective in preventing incidences of Carbon Monoxide Gas poisoning. Several types of detector are now becoming available in DIY shops and the supermarket chains. It is the accumulation of Co in an area that sets of your detector. Smoke electronic sensors have become a standard feature in homes and the engineering is reliable, Carbon Monoxide Gas electronic sensors are not yet as reliable but the engineering is making rapid strides. While Carbon Monoxide sensors are a valuable addition to your home protection measures they are not a substitute for proper appliance maintenance and servicing.

Test your Co electronic detectors

Test your Carbon Monoxide detector regularly to make sure it is doing its job to protect you. Refer to the manufacturer instructions to learn how to check that the detector is operating correctly. sensors should be checked monthly and replaced if problems are found. Many electronic detectors have a test button, this does not test the detector but its purpose is to trigger the alarm so that you can confirm that the sound and the battery are operating. Be aware that the average life span of many Carbon Monoxide electronic detectors is about 2 years There are a variety of electronic detectors designed to meet differing needs. Some operate off the mains others are portable and can be taken on holiday. Select the one that meets your requirements. Some electronic detectors incorporate smoke detection and also Carbon Monoxide gas detection. They will have their own installation instructions which you should follow closely.

Installing a Carbon Monoxide Gas detector

Early warning of heightened Co levels provided by installing a Co detector can ensure that fatalities do not occur. Carbon Monoxide alarms will sound the alarm before the concentrations of gas have reached the levels where an adult would be effected. Co detectors are different to smoke electronic sensors and do not need to be installed high on the wall or near the ceiling. You need a Carbon Monoxide detector to wake you whilst sleeping if Carbon Monoxide Gas is detected so electronic detectors should be sited where the alarm can be heard from the bedrooms.
